Energetic electrons in the exterior cusp: identifying the source
نویسنده
چکیده
A case study is presented to test the role several different sources may play in populating the exterior cusp with energetic (E> 40 keV) electrons. The properties of the electrons measured in the exterior cusp are compared with the expected signatures of three sources in order to weigh the role each source may contribute in populating this region. The potential sources probed are: (1) solar energetic electrons entering the cusp from the solar wind; (2) an equatorial magnetospheric source with particles drifting to high latitudes on the dayside; and (3) a local source accelerating the electrons in situ. From the observations it is likely that local acceleration is the primary source of the energetic electrons in the exterior cusp during this event.

Energetic particle fluxes in the exterior cusp and the high-latitude dayside magnetosphere: statistical results from the Cluster/RAPID instrument
In this paper we study the fluxes of energetic protons (30–4000 keV) and electrons (20–400 keV) in the exterior cusp and in the adjacent high-latitude dayside plasma sheet (HLPS) with the Cluster/RAPID instrument. Using two sample orbits we demonstrate that the Cluster observations at high latitudes can be dramatically different because the satellite orbit traverses different plasma regions for...

Introduction: The goal of any type of radiation therapy in the treatment of tumors, in addition to destroying cancer cells, is to minimizing radiation to nearby healthy cells and thus reducing side damages. For this purpose, targeted radiation therapy (TRT) is more effective in treating of single cells or small cluster of cells. The main factor in the success of this method is...
متن کاملDetermining the mechanism of cusp proton aurora
Earth's cusp proton aurora occurs near the prenoon and is primarily produced by the precipitation of solar energetic (2-10 keV) protons. Cusp auroral precipitation provides a direct source of energy for the high-latitude dayside upper atmosphere, contributing to chemical composition change and global climate variability. Previous studies have indicated that magnetic reconnection allows solar en...
متن کاملBehaviour of mylar foils under bombardment by energetic heavy ions studied by fast electron emission measurements with the modified ARGOS detector
Fast electrons produced by bombarding thin, conducting foils with very energetic heavy ion beams have recently been the object of accurate studies [1]. In the forward direction the velocity spectra present two main components: the convoy cusp with ELC (electron loss to continuum) and ECC (electron capture to the continuum) at veletcron=vprojectile and binary encounter (BE) electrons which when ...
متن کاملEnergetic particle sounding of the magnetospheric cusp with ISEE-1
Observations on 30 October 1978 show the ISEE1 spacecraft passing though the high-altitude dayside northern magnetospheric cusp region from roughly 16:00 to 18:30 UT, during a slow solar wind period (∼380 km/s). More than two orders of magnitude enhancements of the cusp energetic particle (CEP) fluxes were observed along with a depressed and turbulent local magnetic field. The observed variatio...
